Heidi Sees - Series 1 - Chapter 10
My name is Heidi Crolley, and I can see ghosts. I can explain. Mostly.

My phone woke me. It lit up and vibrated noisily on the glass top of the coffee table next to the sleeper sofa.
I rolled over and disentangled my arm from the blue plaid sheets and matching fleece blanket Nicole had left for me. I hadn't tucked anything in, so me and sheets and blanket had created a sort of twisted love triangle. I had changed into the summer pajamas version of my standard outfit of gym pants and long sleeve t-shirt. They were a matched set—which is unusual for me—bright yellow, with Pikachu in various poses all over. Nicole had given them to me for Christmas the year after her first visit to San Jose.
My first thought as I grabbed the phone was that work was calling, because they are needy and we are codependent. Then I remembered when I had gone to bed, and though they were two time zones earlier, I doubted even Damien would still be at his desk, pounding on his keyboard and pretending to be a source of shareholder value.
My phone showed the time as 5:13 AM and that Mom was calling me. I pressed the green button.
"Mom? What—?"
"Heidi, honey," her voice sounded tight. "You have to come over—"
"Mom," I said, cutting her off. "Wait." I rolled to my back, phone against my ear, eyes half-open, staring at the lumpy texture of the popcorn ceiling above me but not really seeing anything. "You can't just call me in the middle of the night—"
"You're not listening, Heidi. You need to come over—"
"I'm trying to listen, Mom, but you're just yelling at me, telling me what to—"
"He's still here, Heidi," Mom said, her voice quivering. "Alan. Your father. I just saw him."
